Did you know that words are divided into classes called parts of speech according to their grammatical properties? Words belonging to different parts of speech have distinct roles in a sentence: verbs express action, while nouns denote things and adjectives their qualities.
Recognizing parts of speech is very useful when learning a foreign language. The part of speech to which a word belongs guides its use in a sentence and defines the correct word order and punctuation. Knowing the role that each word has in a sentence structure clearly helps to understand sentences and also to construct them properly.
WordDive provides you with a hint about the part of speech of each study item. The icon in the exercise window tells you what kind of word is required in that particular exercise, which makes interpreting the image and finding the right answer easier. At the same time, you will gradually learn to identify different parts of speech. A small but effective extra aid for your exercises, isn’t it?
In the following, you will see the part of speech icons with a brief description. The last four are not official parts of speech, but WordDive’s own word groupings that are meant to facilitate learning.
Check out the part of speech icons the next time you exercise – you will learn easier and you will learn more! If you want to, you can read more about parts of speech on our Help page.
