Finnish verbs are divided into six verb types based on how the conjugation stem is formed from the base form.

Verb type 5-ita/-itätarvitaTake out -ta, add tse and personal ending.tarvitse–
Verb type 6-eta/-etäpimetäTake out -ta, add ne and personal ending.pimene–

In the hän form, the last vowel of the verb stem becomes longer and it is written as two.

puhu/a → puhu- → hän puhuu

men/nä → mene – → hän menee

halu/ta → halua- → hän haluaa

tarvi/ta → tarvitse- → hän tarvitsee

However, the vowel doesn’t become longer in verb type 2.

syödä → syö- → hän syö

viedä → vie- → hän vie

saada → saa- → hän saa

If there are any of the consonants k, p or t in the verb, they can also cause changes to the stem. This is called consonant gradation — see more here.

A verb that belongs to the verb type 1 can be a KPT verb, for example lähteä, muuttaa, leipoa. In present tense, there is no KPT change in hän and he forms.

lähteä (t → d)
minä lähden / en lähde
sinä lähdet / et lähde
hän lähtee / ei lähde
me lähdemme / emme lähde
te lähdette / ette lähde
he lähtevät / eivät lähde

In verb types 3, 4, and 6, there may be a reverse KPT verb, e.g. työskennellä, tykätä, kyetä. There is a reverse KPT change also in the hän and he forms.

työskennellä (nt ← nn)
minä työskentelen / en työskentele
sinä työskentelet / et työskentele
hän työskentelee / ei työskentele
me työskentelemme / emme työskentele
te työskentelette / te ette työskentele
he työskentelevät / he eivät työskentele

There is no KPT change in verb types 2 and 5.
