Years are usually read in series of two numbers, except for the years 2001-2009, which are expressed using the word thousand:

  • in (the year) 1987 = in (the year) nineteen eighty-seven
  • in (the year) 2005 = in (the year) two thousand and five

Decades are expressed with the structure in the …s. Centuries can also be expressed with the structure in the…s or by using the word century and an ordinal number:

  • in the 1960s
  • in the 2000s / in the 21st century

Note the difference between the following age-related expressions:

I have a seven-year-old daughter.

My daughter is seven years old.

Note the difference in plural endings with the following numerals:

It’s five hundred metres to the station.

There were hundreds of people at the concert.

Use the definite article the with ordinal numbers:

The post office is on the third floor.

Ordinal numbers can be marked as number+th-ending, e.g. 5th, 10th. (Exceptions: 1st, 2nd, 3rd.):

It is the 5th building on the right.
