The most common prepositions of place are at, on and in.

Use the preposition in in expressions of place, when talking about (i.a.):

• large or limited area (e.g. city, mountain, sky): in the city, in the Alps, in the sky
• buildings or limited spaces (e.g. room, means of transport): in the room, in the car

 

Use the preposition on in expressions of place, when talking about (i.a.):

• surface: on the floor, on the wall
• public transport and streets: on the bus, on the plane, on Main Street
• device or media: on TV, on the internet, on the phone

 

Use the preposition at in expressions of place, when talking about (i.a.):

• A specific address or location where people usually meet: at 10 Downing Street, at the door, at the station
• general locations (e.g. educational institutions, places of work): at school, at a hospital, at a cafe
