La or il?
If you want to learn fluent Italian, you cannot avoid learning the genders of nouns. Usually, nouns ending in -o are masculine and nouns ending in -a are feminine. For example, il mercato, il treno and il riso are masculine, while la bicicletta, la porta and la casa are feminine.
However, there are also quite a few nouns where you cannot tell the gender from the ending of the word. These include nouns ending in -e, such as il nome, la notte and il pane.Â
Fortunately, WordDive makes learning the genders as easy as possible! Each gender has its own voice: a male voice for masculine words (il mercato = market) and a female voice for feminine words (la casa = home). Even if youâre not consciously thinking about them, hearing the different voices will help you learn the genders as you learn the words.Â
