Swedish noun classes

December 21, 2015

Did you know that the Swedish language has five different noun classes? In addition to knowing the correct article (en or ett), it is important to know to which class a noun belongs in order to be able to decline it correctly.

For example, if you know that the word en skola (school) belongs to declination class 1, you will also know that its indefinite plural is skolor.

In the exercises, we have marked the noun class for each noun with a number in brackets after the word (see picture below).

We recommend learning the class alongside each noun. Read more about the five noun classes in the Swedish Grammar Guide.

We are now starting to gradually add the numbers to the exercises. You’ll probably start seeing them first in the more advanced courses.

The numbers are there to help you get more out of your studying with WordDive. You don’t have to write the numbers yourself while exercising, you’ll just see them once you have answered correctly.
